Sperm regeneration timeline

Changed a habit? Sperm take over two months to develop, so the benefit shows up later than you might expect. Pick the date and see exactly when.

    Why it takes so long

    01

    Division

Stem cells in the testes divide to make spermatocytes, which then halve their chromosomes. This is where heat, smoke and alcohol can interfere.

    02

    Shaping

Round cells reshape into sperm with a head, midpiece and tail. The whole journey from stem cell to sperm takes about 64 days or more1.

    03

    Maturing

New sperm then spend several days in the epididymis, where they learn to swim, before they can be ejaculated.

Semen volume is a different story: the fluid comes mainly from the seminal vesicles and prostate, and it refills within days2. For the full picture, read How long does it take sperm to regenerate?

    Questions

How long does it take to make new sperm?

In the classic tracer study, sperm took about 64 days to develop from their earliest stage (Heller and Clermont, 1963). Most sources now quote 64 to 74 days, followed by several more days maturing in the epididymis before ejaculation.

Does semen volume take that long to come back?

No. The fluid part of semen is made by the seminal vesicles and prostate and refills within days. In a study of 9,489 samples, volume rose with each day of abstinence over the first few days (Levitas, 2005).

When should I repeat a semen analysis after a change?

Because a full cycle takes over two months, a repeat test is usually planned around three months after a change. Ask the clinic that ran your first test.

Can one bad weekend ruin my sperm?

Sperm develop in overlapping waves, so a short-lived exposure affects only the cells developing at that time. Consistent habits over the full cycle matter far more than any single day.
